Basketball Odds in Claude, ChatGPT, Codex and Copilot (MCP)

Connect HoopsAPI's MCP server to Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Codex or GitHub Copilot and ask for live basketball odds in plain language, with your existing API key.

By the HoopsAPI team · Updated

HoopsAPI has a remote MCP server at https://hoopsapi.com/mcp that lets Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot and other AI assistants fetch live basketball odds from 6 bookmakers (1xBet, Betway, FanDuel, Pinnacle, Smarkets and Unibet) for over 100 competitions. It uses the same API key as the REST API: get one free at hoopsapi.com/sign-up, add the server to your assistant, and ask in plain language.

What can I ask?

Anything about upcoming and finished basketball games and their odds. For example:

  • “What are tonight's NBA odds? Show the best moneyline for each game and which bookmaker has it.” (list_games)
  • “Compare Pinnacle and 1xBet on Real Madrid's next EuroLeague game: handicap and total.” (list_games, get_game)
  • “Remove the margin from Pinnacle's moneyline for the Knicks game and give me fair win probabilities.” (list_games)
  • “Which EuroLeague games have the biggest disagreement between bookmakers right now?” (list_discrepancies, Pro plan)
  • “How has the handicap moved on the Lakers v Warriors game since it opened?” (get_game_history, Data plan)
  • “Write a Python script that alerts me when any bookmaker offers more than 2.10 on an NBA handicap.” (your API key in code)

How do I add HoopsAPI to Claude (web & desktop)?

  1. Open Customize → Connectors (Settings → Connectors in some versions), click + and choose Add custom connector.
  2. Name it HoopsAPI and enter the URL https://hoopsapi.com/mcp.
  3. Set authentication to "No sign-in" and add a request header: Authorization = Bearer YOUR_API_KEY.
  4. Enable the connector in a chat and ask about basketball odds.

If your account doesn't show request headers yet (Anthropic is rolling them out), use the URL https://hoopsapi.com/mcp?key=YOUR_API_KEY instead and keep it private: anyone with that URL can use your key.

How do I add HoopsAPI to ChatGPT?

  1. Turn on Developer mode: Settings → Apps & Connectors → Advanced settings (on Business and Enterprise plans an admin enables it).
  2. Create a connector, name it HoopsAPI and enter the URL https://hoopsapi.com/mcp?key=YOUR_API_KEY.
  3. Set authentication to "No authentication", accept the warning and create it.
  4. In a chat, choose Developer mode from the + menu, enable HoopsAPI and ask about basketball odds.

ChatGPT connectors can't send an API key header, so the key goes in the URL: keep that URL private, and regenerate the key from your dashboard if it leaks. Which ChatGPT plans include Developer mode changes over time; check OpenAI's help pages if you don't see it.

How do I add HoopsAPI to Claude Code?

  1. Run this once; --scope user makes HoopsAPI available in every project.
terminal
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user hoopsapi https://hoopsapi.com/mcp \
  --header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"

How do I add HoopsAPI to Codex?

  1. Put your key in an environment variable, then add the server to ~/.codex/config.toml (or run the codex mcp add command).
~/.codex/config.toml
# export HOOPSAPI_KEY=YOUR_API_KEY
[mcp_servers.hoopsapi]
url = "https://hoopsapi.com/mcp"
bearer_token_env_var = "HOOPSAPI_KEY"

# or: codex mcp add hoopsapi --url https://hoopsapi.com/mcp --bearer-token-env-var HOOPSAPI_KEY

How do I add HoopsAPI to GitHub Copilot (VS Code)?

  1. Add this to .vscode/mcp.json in your project. VS Code asks for the key the first time the server starts and stores it securely.
.vscode/mcp.json
{
  "inputs": [
    { "type": "promptString", "id": "hoopsapi-key", "description": "HoopsAPI key", "password": true }
  ],
  "servers": {
    "hoopsapi": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://hoopsapi.com/mcp",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer ${input:hoopsapi-key}" }
    }
  }
}

Which tools does the MCP server provide?

ToolWhat it returns
list_competitionsCompetitions with upcoming games, to find exact names
list_gamesUpcoming games in a competition with every bookmaker's main lines
get_gameOne game with every period, alternate lines on request; closing odds after tip-off
get_game_historyEvery price change for a game (Data plan)
list_discrepanciesBiggest cross-bookmaker gaps (Pro and Data plans)
list_providersBookmakers covered and when each was last collected

Odds are decimal, and handicap lines are the home team's handicap. Responses are trimmed for an assistant's context: the full game by default, with halves, quarters and alternate lines on request.

Does it use my API key and plan limits?

Yes. The MCP server and the REST API share one key and one daily limit: each tool call counts as one request, while connecting and listing tools are free. History needs the Data plan and discrepancies the Pro or Data plan; anything else works on every plan, including the free one. When you reach your limit, the assistant is told when the next request is available and which plan raises it. See pricing.

Is my key safe?

Send the key as an Authorization: Bearer header wherever your assistant supports it. The ?key= form exists for clients that can take nothing but a URL, such as ChatGPT; treat that URL like a password. You can regenerate your key at any time from the dashboard, which invalidates the old one.

Try it with real data

The free plan includes 10 requests a day across every league and market. No credit card.
