How Much Do Basketball Odds Differ Between Bookmakers?

Margins and price gaps across bookmakers, from NBA to minor leagues, measured on live odds.

By the HoopsAPI team · Updated

Basketball odds differ a lot between bookmakers: across 457 upcoming games on 17 October 2026, the median gap between the best and worst moneyline price on the same outcome was 6.8%, and margins ranged from about 2–5% on NBA main lines to 7–12% in smaller leagues. We measured this on live odds collected by HoopsAPI from 6 bookmakers in 101 competitions.

Which bookmakers have the lowest basketball margins?

The margin is how much the implied probabilities of a market add up to beyond 100% (see how to remove the margin). Median margin on each bookmaker's main full-game line:

NBA figures are from 12–26 opening-week regular-season games per bookmaker, priced several days ahead, and other leagues from 70–390 games, so treat small differences as noise. Smarkets is an exchange: its “margin” is the gap between the best back and lay prices before commission, which is narrow on busy markets and wide on quiet ones.

Three things stand out:

  • NBA main lines are cheap everywhere. Every bookmaker charges under 5% on the NBA moneyline, and the lowest-margin ones around 2–3%.
  • Smaller leagues cost two to four times as much. The same bookmakers charge 7–12% outside the top competitions, where they have less information and less competition.
  • A bookmaker's ranking changes by league. The cheapest NBA bookmaker in this sample is among the most expensive elsewhere. Comparing “which bookmaker is best” only makes sense per league.

How far apart are prices on the same outcome?

For each game and moneyline side offered by at least three bookmakers (399 cases), we compared the best and worst odds available:

  • The median gap between the best and worst price was 6.8%.
  • In one case in ten the gap was over 23%, mostly in lower leagues.

A bettor who always takes the best available price instead of a single bookmaker's improves their return by several percent before any modelling: often more than a typical model edge. This is why line shopping matters, and why any betting model should be evaluated against the price you could actually get.

How should I compare handicaps and totals?

On handicaps and totals, bookmakers often disagree on the line itself. One may offer the home team at -4.5 while another's main line is -5.5. Comparing those two prices directly is meaningless: half a point in basketball is worth several percent near common margins of victory. Compare prices at the same line, using each bookmaker's alternate lines where they exist. HoopsAPI returns every alternate line for each game so this is possible; see the handicap odds API.

How can I find the biggest price gaps automatically?

The /v1/discrepancies endpoint (Pro and Data plans) ranks the biggest cross-bookmaker differences on main lines for every upcoming game: moneyline prices, handicap lines and totals.

Large gaps are not always opportunities. A bookmaker can be slow to react to news, or may have a different line altogether, and a price that disappears within a minute was never really available. The closing line value guide covers how to check whether a price was actually good.

How was this measured?

We took every upcoming game with odds on 17 October 2026 (UTC) from HoopsAPI. For each bookmaker and game, the main line is the line whose two prices are closest to each other. The margin is 1/home + 1/away - 1 on that line. Gaps compare the decimal odds of the same moneyline side across bookmakers. The NBA regular season started on 20 October, so only its opening week was listed; we will update these figures once the season is under way.
